A facial does not end when you leave the salon. What you do for the next day or two decides whether you keep the result for three weeks or three days.
Here is exactly what I tell clients at the door, written down properly because nobody remembers it while they are half asleep and glowing.
The first 24 hours: what to avoid
- Makeup. Your pores have just been cleared and opened. Foundation goes straight in. Give it the rest of the day if you possibly can.
- Direct sun. Freshly exfoliated skin burns much more easily, and sun exposure undoes brightening work immediately.
- Gym, or anything that makes you sweat heavily. Sweat plus open pores plus friction equals breakouts.
- Steam rooms, saunas and very hot showers.
- Swimming. Chlorine on freshly treated skin is harsh.
- Threading or waxing on the face. Leave two to three days either side. The skin is too vulnerable to be gripped and pulled.
- Retinol, glycolic, salicylic, vitamin C in strong form, any scrub or exfoliating product. Wait three days.
- Touching and picking. Especially at anything that was extracted.
The first 24 hours: what to do
- Keep it simple. Gentle cleanser, moisturiser. That is the whole routine.
- Sunscreen the next morning, and every morning. This is the single biggest factor in whether brightening results hold.
- Drink water.
- Clean pillowcase tonight. Small thing, genuinely helps.
- Sleep on your back if you can, to avoid pressing a freshly treated face into fabric all night.
Why you broke out two days after a facial
This is the most common worried message I get, so let me explain the difference.
Purging is normal. Extraction and exfoliation bring existing congestion to the surface faster. You get a few small spots, usually exactly where you always get them, appearing two to three days later and clearing within a week. Annoying, but it is the process working.
A reaction is different. It appears within hours, it itches or burns, it is red and raised or bumpy across areas where you do not normally break out, and it does not settle. That is not purging — tell your salon straight away so it goes on your record and we avoid that product family next time.
How to make this impossible to get wrong
Tell your therapist every product you currently use, including anything prescribed, and any product that has ever reacted on you. It takes thirty seconds and it prevents nearly every bad facial experience I have seen.
How often should you actually get a facial?
Skin renews itself roughly every four weeks, which is why that is the standard interval.
| Your skin | How often |
|---|---|
| Normal, maintenance only | Every 4–6 weeks |
| Oily or congested | Every 3–4 weeks |
| Dry or dehydrated | Every 4 weeks, hydrating focus |
| Sensitive | Every 6–8 weeks, gentle treatments only |
| Before an event | One 5–7 days before, never the day before |
| Bridal preparation | A course starting 2–3 months out |
More often than every three weeks is usually counterproductive. Over-exfoliated skin gets sensitive, shiny and reactive, and then everything you apply stings. I have turned clients away and told them to come back in a month, and their skin was better for it.
Protecting results in Lahore specifically
- Sunscreen is not optional here. The sun is strong for most of the year, and it is the main reason brightening results fade.
- Cleanse in the evening, properly. A day on Ferozepur Road leaves a genuine layer of dust and pollution on your face.
- Do not over-wash. Twice a day is right. Four times strips your barrier and causes more oil, not less.
- Change pillowcases twice a week in summer.
- Clean your phone screen. It sits against your jaw for hours. Jawline breakouts on one side are extremely common.
- Hard water leaves residue on skin too. If your skin feels tight and filmy after washing, that is often the water.
The honest bit about facials
A facial is maintenance and it is deep cleaning. It is excellent at that. What transforms skin over months is what you do every single day — cleansing, moisturising, sunscreen, sleep, water, and treating actual medical skin conditions medically.
Any salon telling you that facials alone will clear your acne or erase your pigmentation is overselling. I would rather have you as a client for ten years than sell you one expensive package on a promise I cannot keep.
